This is completely normal. The Sportage cooling system is excellent at keeping the engine temperature constant regardless of ambient temperatures. Be it -10 degrees F or 100 degrees F the temp gage will sit constantly at just below halfway. And I've experienced those temperature extremes and never had a problem.

But in order to keep it that way cooling system maintenance is very important. Follow these simple rules and you'll never have problems:

1. Change the coolant every 12 - 18 months. Use a 50/50 or a 60% coolant/40% water mix in cold climates.

2. Never, EVER, use tap water or bottled water in the cooling system. If you do you'll corrode the cooling system. Use ONLY distilled water.

3. Sportage thermostats are prone to stick open after several years. This causes incomplete warm-up, especially in cold climates. You'll see it on the temp gage. It will be very slow to go to normal position or might never get there.

4. If over 80K miles and a timing belt change is needed do the water pump at the same time.

5. If you don't hear the clutch fan engage on very hot days then it has failed and the engine might overheat.
